MedSignals Portable Communicating Med-Minder

Usually ships in 24 - 48 Hours
MedSignals holds four drugs in separate, programmable compartments, each with its own associated signals. No more loading pills day-by-day into pillboxes. Program each bin on the device or point-and-click on the web (which automatically downloads programming to the device on next phone connection.) Select optimal times to take the medication, indicate how many to take, and choose optional warnings or instructions applicable to the drug.

MedSignals then beeps when a dose is due. When an LED is flashing next to the bin, it indicates which drug to take. Lift the lid and several signals occur:

Voice announcements repeat how many pills to take and associated warnings you chose
The number of beeps match the number of pills to be taken
The LED flashes the number of pills to take
Text appears on the screen, in English or Spanish, indicating how many to take and what instruction or warning to heed. If the time isn’t convenient, press the Snooze button for a 30-minute delay. Or, if you wish to skip the dose, press the Snooze button twice to silence it until the next scheduled dose.

When you open the lid, the time is recorded in memory.

The portable device rests in a cradle which allows connection through its adapter to electrical power and by telephone line to the patient's phone. NO INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED IN THE HOME. When the device is returned to the cradle, the device makes contact with sensors that automatically begin recharging the batteries and detecting a phone line. It then auto-dials a pre-programmed 1-800 number to transmit lid opening records to the appropriate charts online at the website, based on the chosen upload frequency.

For each bin, you see a "diamond" chart with markings of each lid opening. Colored bands mark when optimal pill times were scheduled, allowing you to compare your actual times with those prescribed. Taking medications at the right time is vital to your treatment.

Another composite chart shows total lid openings for all four bins for the day. At a glance, you can see overall daily adherence and catch problems immediately.

Features of the Medsignals System:
  • Portable, discrete, and compact for mobile patients. Pillboxes measure 5" x 3" x 1" and fit into purses or pockets inconspicuously.

  • Surprisingly large bins hold several days' pill supply – a month of small tablets and as much as a week of larger ones. For example, a bin can house 32 aspirins of 325 mg. size.

  • Holds and monitors 4 drugs. Individual scheduling and charts for each bin’s drug.

  • Optional warnings or instructions to choose from. For each bin, click and enter those that need to be announced when a lid is opened.

  • Multiple prompting formats. At pill time, four signals alert participants (beep, flashing light, voice, and text.) These multi-sensory alerts are particularly valuable to hearing- or vision-impaired patients.

  • Automatic recording of lid openings. Every dose is time-stamped, generating continuous same-day feedback and a retrievable record of pill-taking histories over time.

  • Instant feedback to users on the device. If you can't recall if you took a pill, simply press the button associated with each bin. You will receive immediate feedback - in both announced and text reports - conveying 3 important answers: (1) time since last lid opening, (2) time to next dosing, and (3) number of lid openings for the bin in past 24 hours.

  • Automatic dialups to server by home telephone line-not wireless or internet. MedSignals connects via the patient's own telephone line to a toll-free number. No extra wireless minutes, security gaps, or unreliability associated with cell-phone connectivity.

  • Personalized web page shows charts for each bin's activity plus one composite for all 4 bins.

  • Secured web pages, accessible only with correct username and password. No personal identification is recorded and maintained on sites, only serial numbers or account numbers.

  • Control condition silent monitoring. For research studies where monitoring naturalistic patterns is the aim, the device can be masked to hide feedback and set to deliver no alerts, while it silently records lid openings.

  • Ease of programming. Setting of alarms is straightforward and simple to perform, either on the device manually or via the website. When you program the device online, the next time your device dials the server, the most recent programming is downloaded. Systems prevent accidental setting changes.

  • Snooze button allows you to repeatedly delay signals for 30 minutes or, by pressing twice, to skip a dose.

  • Volume of beeps and announcements easily adjust to 3 levels: high, low, and mute.

  • Two scheduling options: Fixed actual times or Interval-based dosing times. When drugs should be taken at proper intervals, you set only number of dosing times per day-the device automatically calculates the next dose time based on last lid opening.

  • Durable and sealed. Devices are constructed in an FDA-approved plastic, durable enough for use in football helmets. They are sealed to prevent access to components inside.

  • Rechargeable batteries can support the device for years and rarely need to be replaced.

  • Affordable. These multi-purpose MedSignals units are priced at $210 per unit. Upload and web access fees range from $3.50 to $15/month, depending on your desired frequency.
  • Simple user interface, ergonomically sensitive and operationally intuitive. Human factors were designed for simple, non-confusing operations.

  • Multiple languages. All text messages, verbal announcements, and instruction manuals are in English and Spanish. Other language capabilities are being developed.

  • Braille numbers next to each bin.

  • Error-resistant. A refill option lets you open lids to reload pills without it mistakenly recording a pill taken. Rapid repeated lid openings also auto-detect errors and delete the event in memory.

  • A backlight automatically illuminates the screen during lid openings.

  • Barrel-shaped bins (like cash register drawers) permit ease of "rolling" a pill easily up the outer wall, unlike squared corners in which pill retrieval can be difficult.
